What causes a migraine?

Sep 19, 2013

The exact cause of migraine is not fully determined. Experts have proven people with migraines react to a variety of factors and events, called triggers. These triggers can vary from person to person and may not always lead to a migraine.  A combination of triggers is more likely to set off a migraine headache. A person’s response to triggers can also vary.

Frequent migraine triggers include:

  • Lack of or too much sleep
  • Not eating enough
  • Bright lights, loud noises, or strong odors
  • Hormone changes caused by menstrual cycle
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Change in weather
  • Alcohol
  • Caffeine (too much or withdrawal)
